Secrets to being an artist – disclaimer: somethings might repeat in some way, but that’s because they are that much more important.

Make your art, write and talk about it how deep it is, but never show the work.

When people do not understand your work, act frustrated but make the other people feel stupid for not understanding your work, rather then explaining what you made.

Talk in small groups of 3-4 and give the cold shoulder to others and make them think you are laughing are talking about them.
-Also make sure you are thought of as the smartest of the group of friends.

When explaining your work make sure you use the largest words you can find and lots of Philosophic jargon. And explain it in a round about way that really doesn’t explain anything at all, but makes people think you said some profound.

Imitate and reference artists works from the 1970’s or what the post popular philosophical movement is going on, could be 1930’s French or any others as long as they are dead or still doing the old stuff.

Always be serious, never use humor unless it is inside joke to your few select and it has a seriousness behind it.

Angst.

Never say that your work would be good for a home or decorative. Always make it so no one would have a place to put it so you can complain the hardness of living as an artist. And just inside hope for a major Museum want to put your work in their collection.

If you are not going to be serious about your work you have to be serious about not being serious.

When writing about art, never use Art History References, unless it is Art Theorists. Base most of your writing on Sociology, Anthropology, Sciences, etc..

Write about what you are going to make. But never make it, and explain that it is to conceptually complicated to make. Or if you do make the work make sure you do not explain that your work is nowhere near what you wrote about. Just look at people dumbfounded that they do not see it.

Copy old movements and say you are new and different.
-Namely copy what was at one point in time to be controversial and claim your work is.

Contemporary – adj 1: occurring or existing at the same time 2: being of the same age 3:marked by characteristics of the present period. The Merrian-Webster Dictionary.

So I had a conversation with an older man who said that he was a traditional artists with his landscapes. He was pointing at some of the work at my gallery, Freeport Square Gallery, on what was contemporary to him. I was then telling him what I personally felt was contemporary art. I obviously hit a funny nerve on him.

When you look at the definition above on what “contemporary” means it makes me think that contemporary art is much broader then some like to say it is. I like to think as simply as possible contemporary art is art that is made now. It can be something completely new to the art world and unheard of. Or it can be from an artist who is working on preserving the styles of the past. I say this because there has been so many art movements and there is always a group that is working on keeping a movement afloat. It can be someone with an extremely traditional style or someone working on keeping a movement that was big ten years ago. It can also be someone working on trying to start something new or not even trying but making something new. The man I talked to did not like this concept. He said his work is traditional and I think he didn’t think it fit with the works I have here. Which that is his own thing to think. I was just trying to say that he is in my own opinion a contemporary artist. Which is what I think made him not so happy. Pretty much to me if an artist is alive making art in 2009 it is a contemporary artist and they are creating contemporary art. Even if the work looks like it came from 1800. I do not mean to offend but that is how I see contemporary art. And that there is many subcategories of movements in contemporary art and even ones we have yet to figure are even being made.

So I say, it’s what is happening in many different styles now. If art is made now it’s contemporary. The big question is how far back does contemporary go?

Riding Bicycles Long bike rides for exercise or long bike rides just for kicks, even short rides just to run errands or again just kicks. They always seem very rewarding. There is also just getting to know the bikes. I have many bikes I ride, one is not a bicycle at all, it is a tricycle. Each time I ride one of the many it is a different and wonderful feeling. When riding a bike it’s not as much as a feeling of flying or freedom or such things that people say. It’s just the feeling of going and not thinking. I tend to find it a very meditative feeling when going on long distant rides by myself. Just listening to the wind, tires of my bike on the ground, the ends of my mountain bike whistling like blowing over a glass bottle top. Like it is (somewhat) said in the Zen the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, it’s not being boxed in as you watch nature go by. When you get out on those roads on a bike under your own power listening to everything around you I tend not to find a way to describe it.

For an entirely different feeling of riding bikes it’s the around town. There is the zipping about on a bike that doesn’t have the slow feeling of an old solid steal bicycle. Which in it self is a fun thing to do all it’s own. But, riding an old bike about town just to do an errand that you don’t need to rush to do, or just to ride about. That is a wonderfully relaxing thing to do as well. Even with cars whipping by and irritated that you are riding a bicycle to begin with you kind of don’t give a rats ass what those people are thinking. You are more like to be annoyed by those same people when riding a bike quickly about to get a lot of things done. A vintage Raleigh or Schwinn Tricycle, any of that will roll right off your shoulders. Those bikes have such a wonderful feeling when riding them. Your paying attention more so on the old bikes to the cars around you. When you get to ride past the car that just gave you the dirty look because they are stuck in traffic feels so much better to feel the joy of the old bike as you pass them again. I will say riding those old bike, I don’t think I have ever ridden one and been in a bad mood during or afterward. Which sometimes helps big time if you get on it grumpy, you wont get off the bicycle grumpy, just happy. Well just like Queen say’s “I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride it now”.

So when I was growing up I had a Turtle, well a Tortes to put it right, Tortu was her name. She was a great pet, took care of all the earwigs in the yard. I could just let her chill back there and she would chomp them down like no tomorrow. It’s really to bad that she vanished from her tank. There are suspicion that a kid that we had, back when my mom ran a day care, crawled out of his own enclosure and took Tortu out and moved it to the trash and was not realized on time. I will say I always hoped that she some how made it out the door and is living it up somewhere. Cause if she didn’t get taken out, I would probably still have her as a pet. Those things live forever. She was a box turtle. Which makes me wish to get another, but after I got her it was becoming illegal to buy them because they were becoming endangered.

I could just see now chillin’ eating tacos with my Tortu giving her some of the lettuce to enjoy. While on the subject of tacos I have to say that I can never really understand the draw of fish tacos. I like tacos a lot. I like a them with a crunchy shell. I like them with burger and cheese and lettuce and tomatoes and all kids of other things on top of it. I even like the Choco-Taco. Ice Cream in a taco shell with chocolate to seal it off. But why are people going with fish? I don’t know. Now if someone hands me one I might be a bit hesitant. But I will give it a go. I think it’s one of those things I don’t want to buy for myself though. I will say though that I’m more then willing to swap beef for chicken any day on my tacos. I love chicken!

I would actually love to own a bunch of chicks. Some to raise to eat, but eggs, even better! I love a good scrambled egg or two in the morning. I have to say it would be nice to get up take my dog for a walk, go for a quick bike ride come back and get some fresh eggs. Then to sit down and have some scrambled eggs with cheese and salt and pepper mixed in, maybe a little green pepper. That does make me think though, which came first, Chicken or the Egg? Also which was eaten first?

Those are always good questions. “Which came first?” “If a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound?” Or the big question of many, “What is the Meaning of Life?” Forty-Two of course. But at the same time to me why do we want to know the Meaning of Life? If you know the Meaning of Life doesn’t that kind of defeat living? Think about it. Religions and scholars have been trying to find this meaning from day one. But if you find it, what are going to do after that. And if we all know what life is actually about wouldn’t that make people stop trying to live life? For all we know the Meaning of Life is just trying to figure out what the Meaning of Life is. Maybe after some true thinking and reading and what not, I’ll come up with a better idea of the Meaning of Life is. I will say if anyone figures it out. As interesting as it might be, or not, I don’t know if I would want to hear the answer.

Who knows, maybe, just maybe Turtles, tacos and chicks are all what the Meaning of Life is really about. Long life and eating and watching little chicks become chickens.

Science fiction has predicted many things that technology later followed. My personal favorite is always Star Trek and the flip phone. But there are always the few that I still wait for and wonder when.

The flying car for example. Why are we all still stuck to the ground? Flying cars would be so cool. I mean most likely they wouldn’t be gas powered, really I’m just guessing on that. But I think something more then just gas would be needed to lift a car and people. Then there is always the free roaming robots doing everyday tasks. I mean we have them kind of. The robotic vacuum. Personal computers. Coffee makers that your coffee before your awake in the morning. Many everyday things come from all of those old and semi new Sci-Fi shows that kind of foretold the future of technology. But there is one in particular that I want to ask why it hasn’t happened yet, and that is Teleporting.

Now I know the complications and most likely the reason why it will never happen is because of breaking a person or object down into ity bity molecules and then putting them back together the right way. You don’t want to have your head actually up your own ass, even though I know people that often do. But think of how small the world would feel if there was teleporting stations all over. You could have Teleporting commuter stations and off you go. Work in a different state or country and that wouldn’t be an issue. Visit friends thousands of miles away for dinner and still go home to feed the dog after. Also people are trying to figure green transportation well, no gas needed. Now the thing is you would have to make various size teleporters. I mean if you wanted to take a car you still could. Which would be pretty nice. I’m also sure though that if people were teleporting all over the place right now they would have shut the stations down with people freaking out about “Swine Flu” or “H1N1” I mean. But even then with illnesses or doctors needed in major emergencies they could be brought in that minute for the help of their specialties. Think of the costs that schools could save for lectures and things like that. You could bring an artist, scientists, poet to the school for the talk and then send them home without having to fly them in, find them a hotel room, and all of that. So who is working on this? I know I have idea’s what a teleporter should look like. Anyone for the science end of it?

This is a response to the person who asked “what is art?” after my what makes a professional artist.

Art is always changing on what it means. Some things always stay the same. Paint is paint. Studios are studios. Metal is metal. But what is art is always the on going question. Think of what it was throughout time. Decoration for rulers. A craft. Decoration on functional objects. Then one day someone or many people decided it to be more. Paintings were being made with the idea of art for art sake. Art to make a statement. As all of that continued even then it changed among it’s own thoughts. Art was to be only political. Art is to only be entertainment. Art is only to be this or that. The movements have come in faster and faster, always changing what we see and think is art. Realism. Abstract. Dada. Pop. Minimalists. It changes over and over again. Swinging back and forth between all theory to all making. The thing is, with all the movements, all the theories based on all the movements over time and the ones that have not been yet discovered, well where does that put art of 2009? All the movements of making and theory is fought over day in, day out of whose work is right and whose is wrong. How to approach what should be made what should be written about. But what people are truly fighting about is that movements need to be saved and not lost. They wont be lost because there is always someone doing these. But the ideas of new ideas needs to be looked at. We do always find the movements. Just usually 20 or 30 years later. So what is art in 2009. It’s all the movements and theories that have been and those that are being made now and those to come. That is what makes Art 2009 and art in the future.

It can also be called Post-Neo-Dada-Pop, Neo-Post-Pop-Dada or even Post-Neo-Pop-Dada. This Name Neo-Post-Dada-Pop is most widely used. Artist Sebastian Meade first coined the movement in 2008. His work truly is part of the movement. He refers to this movement as it states a combination of Dada which was using everyday found objects as art and Pop art being a direct reflect on Pop culture of it’s time. What Neo-Post-Dada-Pop is using found everyday objects to indirectly reference things from Pop culture. This movement also represents the Green Revolution of not just the American realization of making things greener but the world. This movement has been going on for sometime just has never been coined a movement until now.

Traveling Time:

That’s right Time Travel. Is it possible? You would never really know unless you travel it yourself. Think if someone traveled back in time to change something of their present time those witness to the change in time would never notice the event change. We would think it is that. So even if someone went back in time to change a major event, we wouldn’t know. Who knows how many events have been changed? Half the world could have blown up and we wouldn’t know the difference.

Also when you think of time travel you could never go back to the future you visited the first time. If things change each time you go back, then think of the future it changes. So if you went into the future and saw who one the Super bowl or world series, even who one the presidencies, by going back to your time things in the future would then change by your reactions. The Butterfly effect as it is called. So really the only reason to use time travel is to change the past for the future. But you would never be able to go to the future and expect the same future again.

When you think about it if you were able to travel time, does that mean if you went to far back, does that mean it could change things that would stop your time machine from working? There are many questions to be asked before taking this jump in time. It would be fun to travel time if there wasn’t some effect. Look at the Simpson’s, when Homer has the time traveling toaster. He is never able to return to his future. He does miss the raining donuts. But that’s just a cartoon. The theory is good though. They say you can’t do anything or your future will change right. But doesn’t by setting your feet down some place that you never where a change? Therefore changes the future. It might not be a big change but it would change.

So is time travel possible. Yes. Just beware of the traps. And if you like what you got before you travel back in time, do not expect it to be the same. Go forward and you should be able to come back to what you left. Just do not expect to see what you saw a head of time. Only because if you can’t go back and return what you left then you should not be able to see what you saw from the future. Things are being repeated in different ways, but that is sometimes the best way to make sure you know what is being said. Now I’m sure this wont be the last discussion of time travel. It’s now open for discussion. Also I might contradict it all later in another write up about time travel.
